It's easy to say you know Cuba after being there once, then coming back with sights, sounds and ideas stuck to you like cat hairs. But to really know Cuba, to get past the iconic cars, long cigars, and the faded murals of Castro, you've got to open your heart as well as your eyes and ears. Few people do that. But Rance Jones did. The seven years he spent on his Watercolors of Cuba have resulted in a stunning evocation of the complex reality of Cuban life, the constant swirling of beauty and coarseness, of brightest light and elongated shows of dark and decay, the vibrancy of youth and the inevitable decomposition of age. Rich in technique and richer still in empathy, these 100 or so paintings and drawings of Cuba grabbed my soul, and left my heart with images I will not soon forget.

He also shared in a Pulitzer Prize in 2002 for his contribution to “Portraits of Grief” a New York Times series covering victims of 9/11.  He is the author of  "The Cubans: Ordinary Lives in Extraordinary Times" and "The Man Who Invented Fidel"
